Space and place are often seen in opposition to each other –place being a specific, bounded location layered with cultural associations, and space as abstract, empty and continuous.

Sense of place is therefore the particular meanings or resonance or identity of a particular place or locality, which can evoke a sense of attachment and belonging, but also the feeling of being out of place. Sense of place is therefore, ‘the experiential and affective traces that tie humans into particular environments’ (Anderson 2015, p. 53).
